What is Awakening?

Awakening is becoming conscious that you are a divine soul experiencing a human life and the process of rediscovering your soul self. For some awakening starts quickly with a flood of information and enlightenment, for others awakening starts more gradually. In either case awakening is a journey that once started we experience for the rest of our lifetime here on earth.

How Do I Know if I am Awakening?

The universe brings what we need into our lives at exactly the right time. If you are reading this you are opening to the concepts of awakening, that is the first step in the journey.

Now, let's break down some components of awakening and their associated symptoms…

Awakening to the Mind

As humans we see life through the lens of the mind. Our minds categorize things into good and bad based upon what makes us feel comfortable and uncomfortable. As souls we accept our reality without judgement, knowing that there is no definitive good and bad, and that polarity is necessary. As we awaken, we become conscious of this difference. We notice ourselves experiencing different inner states of being.

During meditation, when we are most connected to our soul selves, we have feelings of inner bliss and tranquility.

At work we experience moments of panic when an urgent deliverable comes up.

When we are stuck in traffic, we experience frustration.

Watching the sunset, we feel in awe of the beauty that is all around us.

Becoming conscious of these varying inner experiences is part of the awakening journey and is commonly referred to as mindfulness.

Part of awakening is learning how to manage these varying states of inner being. For example, once you know what inner peace feels like the moments of panic feel more intense, however how we can use

tools such as mindfulness and breathwork to calm

our minds in these moments and come back to our center. This leads us to awakening symptoms and things that can help navigate them, but first let's discuss another side of awakening.

Energetic Awakening

As we become aware that we are souls experiencing a human life our energetic fields change and adjust to holding higher frequency energy. This is in part due to the changes in emotional states we covered above and can also be supported by meditation, grounding and lifestyle changes.

How Does Energetic Awakening Happen?

We all have energy bodies that carry energetic vibrations, blockages, and baggage. Our emotions greatly impact our energy bodies. We will save the deep dive into energy bodies and emotions for another day, however, let's start by understanding that fear, anger and greed are low vibrational energies and love, gratitude and joy are high vibrational energies.

As we begin experiencing greater levels of consciousness through mindfulness, we start to notice that fear-based thinking is inherent in our society. We become aware of how emotionally reactionary we are to things that make us uncomfortable. Through the simple act of being aware of low vibrational emotions we begin to shift towards higher vibrational emotions such as, love, gratitude, and joy. You probably won't become like the buddha overnight; however, you will start to see yourself making small adjustments like being patient in traffic or smiling at a stranger in the grocery store. These things bring you more peace and joy which in turn raises your vibration.

This shift in our emotional state allows our energy bodies to vibrate at a higher level which facilitates healing past traumas and triggers our subconscious mind to invite in new experiences. Which leads us back to….

Awakening Symptoms

Awakening symptoms are brought on by shifts in our consciousness and energetic bodies. These symptoms can include:

Feeling tired

  • As your energetic body begins vibrating at a higher level your physical body may feel tired as it learns to support this new energy. Also, you may find that you start to release a lot of stress from your life and come out of fight or flight mode. With this shift you will go through a period of time where you crave sleep as you begin to feel safe and trust the universe will be there to support you.

Feeling sick (cold/flu symptoms)

  • As your energy body vibrates at a higher level your physical body may experience a detoxification process that can cause cold/flu symptoms. *Always consult your doctor with any concerns you have as while these may be awakening symptoms they are still related to your physical health.

Feeling unexpected emotions

  • Blockages in your energy body will be broken down and released by the higher vibrational energy entering your energetic system. The release of these blockages can cause unexpected emotions to arise, sometimes these are uncomfortable emotions, but know they will pass. Previously blocked energetic pathways will also re-open which can lead to increases in mental clarity, feelings of joy and a sense of peace as you come back to energetic balance.

A longing for life to slow down/Feeling like there isn't enough time.

  • As you awaken your life experiences will seem richer, almost like going from black and white to color TV. You will want to slow down to experience life's moments more fully rather than packing your schedule with back-to-back appointments and events. You may feel more overwhelmed when your schedule is busy and wish you had more free time to be in the present moment.

Depression and questioning the world around you.

  • During the awakening process you may experience ego death or the dark night of the soul. The ego is a picture of ourselves we create based upon our perceived likes and dislikes. As we awaken we begin to question some of the things that previously held great importance in our lives. This can lead to a temporary feeling of being lost or lacking motivation.

A call to start a new career/go back to school/start a new hobby.

  • Awakening will shift your perspective on life. The changes to your energetic body and emotions will trigger your subconscious mind to be open to new possibilities for your experience here on earth. You may feel motivated to open your dream business or notice that unexpected opportunities arise - the universe is responding to your awakening and helping you along your path!

Supporting Your Awakening Journey

Awakening is one of the most fulfilling parts of the human experience and it is common to want to "expedite" the process. Unfortunately, there is no fast lane to enlightenment. Awakening happens for each of us on its own timeline that is perfectly fit for our lives. In fact, an essential part of awakening is learning to surrender and trust things to unfold for your greatest and highest good at exactly the right time.

This is not to say there are not things you can do to support your journey. One of the most useful tools you can use is meditation. Start with 5 to 10 minutes of meditation a day and work your way up to 20-30 minutes. Meditation supports the full awakening process from helping you become mindful of your inner emotional state to easing awakening symptoms.

Other things that can help with awakening/ease awakening symptoms are:

- Drinking plenty of water

- Being conscious of the types of foods you are eating and how they make you feel

- Limiting alcohol, smoking and caffeine

- Spending more time outside in nature

- Consciously taking time to connect to your inner voice/higher self/guides and acknowledging that they are there to guide you (bonus: ask your guides for help when you need it - that is what they are there for!)

Awakening is a journey that you continue on throughout your lifetime. It is a beautiful path to follow with many twists and turns that cannot be rushed, so relax and enjoy the experience.
